The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine is dedicated to providing high-quality emergency care for patients, offering exceptional educational experiences for residents and students, and continually pursuing knowledge and scholarship. We provide state-of-the-art care with around 80,000 patient visits annually at University Hospital in Columbia, MO.

It's an exciting time of expansion for the MU Health System, which is building a strong and diverse faculty and staff to support both excellence in clinical care and academics. The emergency department is staffed by board-certified School of Medicine faculty and equipped with state-of-the-art technology and electronic medical records.

University Hospital is home to the Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD, Trauma Center, central Missouri's only American College of Surgeons-verified Level I trauma center and one of only two such centers in the state. The hospital is a Certified Acute Stroke Center, an active tertiary care referral center and a regional resource center, providing physicians with a wide variety of patients to treat, including the recently moved Children’s Hospital. Integrated with our Children’s Hospital the MU Birthing Center is Mid-Missouri's most comprehensive women's health care facility, averaging 30,000 visits per year.

Visiting Students

Applications for 2026-2027 visiting student rotations will be accepted through the VSLO system beginning March 15th, 2026. Per school policy we can only accepting visiting students  from U.S. accredited LCME and COCA medical schools and students must have completed the third-year core clerkships before their visiting rotation begins.
